Balan Nambiar

In early 2022, I spent two months travelling India. I wanted to embark on a trip whereby I could meet a range of different individuals and document their lives. I met Balan Nambiar through my grandfather, as they are good friends. Mr. Nambiar is a renowned sculptor in India, and had his work displayed around the country. I was fortunate to recieve an invitation to document a day at his workshop, and witness his creative process. Mr. Nambiar was constructing a birdhouse scupture for a client, with the help of a welder and design assistant.

One of the most exciting things for me as a photographer is to act invisible in an environment, and document activities candidly. I aspire to make the viewer feel as though they can enter the image and invision themselves within the space. It is difficult to achieve this when the subject actively acknowledges the camera.

Here are some images from the few hours I was fortunate to spend with Mr. Nambiar in his studio.
